Natural swimming ponds · Devon & Cornwall

Living water, made for swimming

Bespoke natural and hybrid swimming ponds where water quality, planting, structure and the wider landscape are designed as one.

Natural swimming pond with clear water and planted edges in Devon

Beautiful because it works naturallyThe swimming experience, water treatment and landscape character are resolved together from the outset.

Bespoke natural swimming ponds

A swimming pond should feel like part of the landscape

SAS Aquatics designs, builds and supports fully natural and hybrid swimming ponds across Devon and Cornwall—combining a beautiful place to swim with water, planting and landscape that mature together.

This is not a standard pool product with a natural finish. The swimming experience, regeneration or filtration, structure, edges, planting, access and long-term servicing all need to work as one considered system.

Choose the right approach

Natural-looking water with a system designed to perform

The best solution depends on the site, the swimming experience you want, the amount of planting, your appetite for technology and how you intend to care for the pond over time.

Fully natural

Fully natural swimming ponds

Plant-led swimming ponds where the regeneration zone, planting, circulation and biological processes are integral to the design and character of the waterbody.

A landscape investment

For clients planning more than a conventional pool

Natural swimming ponds suit people who want water to become a defining part of the property: somewhere to swim, observe wildlife and enjoy throughout the year—not an isolated blue rectangle used only in summer.

Living water, properly engineered

How a natural swimming pond keeps its water clear

The landscape may look effortless, but clarity and reliability depend on the swimming area, regeneration or filtration route, circulation, structure, levels and planting being designed as one system.

Fully natural

Regeneration and planting

Fully natural swimming ponds use carefully sized regeneration zones, suitable aquatic plants, mineral media and controlled circulation to support biological water treatment without creating the appearance of a conventional pool.

Hybrid

Natural character with additional control

Hybrid natural swimming ponds combine planted water with discreet pumps, skimming and biological filtration. This can reduce the space needed for regeneration and provide more predictable management for frequently used pools.

Buildability

Structure, waterproofing and services

Excavation, retaining structure, liner or tanking system, hydraulics, plant space, access, drainage and electrical services all affect feasibility, cost and the construction sequence.

Natural swimming pond costs vary widely with size, ground conditions, access, structure, waterproofing, filtration, finishes, planting and wider landscaping. We establish the viable route before specifying finishes or presenting a formal estimate.

How we work

Feasibility before finishes

A successful swimming pond begins with honest decisions about space, water, structure, access, use and maintenance. Surface finishes come later.

Discover

Site and ambitions

We discuss the property, how you want to swim and use the space, preferred character, approximate scale, access, programme and budget.

Assess

Feasibility and route

A site visit helps establish levels, ground, water, services, landscape opportunities and whether fully natural, hybrid or conversion is the strongest route.

Develop

Design and specification

The swimming zone, regeneration or filtration, structure, circulation, edges, planting and construction sequence are resolved together.

Deliver

Build and aftercare

Construction, commissioning and planting are followed by clear guidance and an appropriate plan for establishment and long-term servicing.

Professional feasibility assessment from £500 + VAT We review the submitted information first, then confirm the appropriate visit scope and fee before anything is booked. Design, specification and specialist supporting work are scoped separately where required.

Follow-on credit: £250 + VAT is credited to the first works invoice when SAS Aquatics is commissioned within six months for qualifying construction or major refurbishment of £10,000 + VAT or more. Written reports, specialist work and travel supplements are excluded; eligibility is confirmed before the visit.

Common questions

Useful answers before we talk

What is the difference between fully natural and hybrid?

A fully natural swimming pond gives planting and biological regeneration a central role. A hybrid system uses additional filtration or treatment while retaining a natural landscape character. The best choice depends on site, space, use and maintenance preferences.

Can an existing swimming pool be converted?

Often, yes. We first assess the structure, levels, access, services and useful components, then determine whether conversion offers better value than a new build.

Are natural swimming ponds maintenance-free?

No living water system is maintenance-free. Planting, surfaces, water balance, circulation and equipment all need appropriate care. We design with long-term management in mind and can provide ongoing support.

When should we involve SAS Aquatics?

Ideally before the wider garden or landscape design is fixed. Early involvement makes it easier to coordinate levels, views, access, services, planting and the overall investment.

Do natural swimming ponds need planning permission?

Sometimes. The answer depends on the property, scale of earthworks, drainage, location, landscape designations and any listed-building, ecological or engineering constraints. We can help identify when planning or specialist advice should be brought in.

Can fish live in a natural swimming pond?

Fish are usually avoided in the swimming system because they add nutrients, disturb planting and make clear-water management harder. If keeping fish matters to you, tell us during feasibility so the waterbodies and treatment approach can be planned appropriately.

Do you use native plants?

Plant selection is led by the water-treatment role, site conditions, landscape character and long-term maintenance. Native and locally appropriate species are used where they perform well, alongside other suitable plants where the system requires them.

How much does a natural swimming pond cost?

There is no useful fixed price without understanding the site and brief. Size, excavation, access, structure, waterproofing, filtration, finishes and landscaping all matter. Our budget guide explains the main cost drivers before a site-specific estimate.
