A hybrid system may be appropriate when a fully planted regeneration approach is not a practical fit for the available space, intended use or desired control over water appearance. Skimmers, pumps, mechanical filtration, biological filtration, UV treatment and controlled circulation may be used where appropriate, supported by specialist hydraulic design when the project requires it.
Hybrid does not mean maintenance-free, and it is not an honest promise of identical clarity every day. Seasonal conditions, loading, planting and maintenance still affect how the water behaves. These systems normally cost more to construct and service, need reliable equipment access and are offered selectively where an ongoing maintenance arrangement is accepted.
When a hybrid system may fit
The right route depends on site area, swimming expectations, existing infrastructure, access, energy use and the character you want the finished landscape to have.
Less room for regeneration
Selected treatment equipment can reduce the planted area needed for water management, although the final balance still depends on the site and use.
More controlled circulation
Skimming, pumps and treatment stages can make debris removal and routine management more predictable than a fully passive approach.
An existing pool or pond
Some existing structures can be adapted, but shell condition, levels, hydraulics, waterproofing and available plant space need to be assessed first.

Planting, stone, timber, beaches and informal edges can keep the visual focus on the landscape while essential equipment is integrated discreetly.

Where levels, access, an existing structure, plant-room space or the wider landscape cannot be judged remotely, professional assessment starts from £500 + VAT. The purpose is to identify the constraints, credible routes and most useful next step before major design or construction commitments are made.
What the initial assessment is — and is not
- It provides a practical site review and route forward.
- It is not automatically a detailed construction design, structural report, planning application or laboratory water analysis.
- A £250 + VAT credit applies to qualifying construction or refurbishment of at least £10,000 + VAT commissioned within six months.
- Any additional surveys, permissions or specialist design work are agreed separately where required.

Before you decide
Is a hybrid swimming pond chlorinated?
Hybrid systems are normally developed around biological and mechanical treatment rather than routine chlorine as the primary treatment. The exact approach depends on the project and intended use.
Will the water always be crystal clear?
Hybrid treatment can provide more controlled clarity, but no responsible design should promise identical conditions every day. Weather, nutrients, use and maintenance all influence the water.
Does a hybrid pond still need maintenance?
Yes. Skimmers, pumps and treatment equipment need checking, debris must be managed and planting still needs seasonal care. Hybrid projects are taken forward on the basis that equipment access and an appropriate ongoing maintenance arrangement are accepted.
When is a hybrid system the wrong choice?
It may be the wrong route when there is enough room for a well-designed plant-led pond, when the additional construction and running complexity is not justified by the brief, or when ongoing specialist maintenance cannot be supported.
Will SAS Aquatics design every specialist element in-house?
Not necessarily. Where beneficial, we may bring in proven hydraulic, filtration or commissioning support so the system is designed, installed and handed over by the right combination of specialists.
Can an existing pool or pond be converted?
Sometimes. The existing structure, waterproofing, levels, available treatment space and desired appearance need to be assessed before a sensible conversion route can be confirmed.
How much will the finished project cost?
Size alone is not enough to price it responsibly. Access, ground conditions, structure, filtration, plant space, materials and landscape work all affect cost, so we review the site information before indicating a range.
