From ageing crazy paving to a natural, practical pond

This established garden pond had charm, but its uneven crazy-paving edge, poor water quality and limited planting space no longer matched the surrounding garden. SAS Aquatics carried out a complete refurbishment—retaining useful materials and the character of the original pond while rebuilding the structure for better water retention, easier management and more valuable habitat.

The challenge

The original pond had uneven hard landscaping, little room for aquatic planting and an unstable water level that made it difficult to look after. The client wanted to keep the pond as a familiar garden feature, but replace the dated finish with something more natural and functional.

Before work began, the pond was safely drained and the existing fish and plants were transferred to temporary holding tanks for the duration of the refurbishment.

The restoration approach

Removing and reshaping

The old crazy paving and concrete were removed, with the best slate pieces set aside for reuse. The pond was extended in depth, width and length to improve its proportions and provide more room for fish, aquatic plants and visiting wildlife.

Re-lining for reliable water retention

A new EPDM pond liner was installed over protective underlay, giving the enlarged pond a durable water-retaining structure. The work also created clearer planting zones and a more usable relationship between the water and the surrounding garden.

Services and practical details

Outdoor-rated twin electrical sockets were added for the pond equipment and lighting. Two integrated pump-and-filter fountain units provide water movement and support water clarity without dominating the finished design.

The finished pond

Reclaimed slate now forms a clean, secure and natural-looking edge. Fresh turf connects the work back into the garden, while the enlarged planting zones provide space for marginal and aquatic vegetation to develop. The finished pond remains recognisably part of the original garden, but is more attractive, more wildlife-friendly and much easier to manage.
