Recovering a pond hidden by growth and water loss
A leaking, heavily overgrown garden pond was stripped back, relined and reshaped—retaining useful planting while restoring open water and stronger habitat margins.

Project overview
A small pond with far more potential than its condition suggested
The owners had built this wildlife pond around four to five years earlier. Over time it developed a significant leak and almost disappeared beneath vegetation, leaving very little open water and poor views from the garden room.
The aim was to retain its wildlife value while creating a more durable pond with reliable water levels, usable margins and a natural appearance.

The pond was still there—just difficult to see
The existing position suited the garden, so the project concentrated on fixing what was failing and making the original footprint work better.
- Failed liner and extremely low water levels
- Vegetation covering most of the pond surface
- Little visible open water or usable marginal habitat

Restoration approach
Retain the useful habitat, rebuild the structure
The pond was dismantled carefully and suitable existing plants were divided for reuse. Once the failed liner was removed, the basin could be regraded around dependable water retention and more useful planting shelves.
Reveal the original pond
Vegetation and the failed liner were removed carefully so the condition and profile could be assessed.
Regrade the basin
Depths and shallow wildlife shelves were rebuilt to create better open water and planting zones.
Restore water retention
A new protected liner system created a durable base and dependable finished water level.
Rebuild the margins
Natural stone edging and retained plants were used to settle the restored pond into the garden.
The result
Open water returned without losing the pond’s character
The finished pond now holds water properly, provides clearer views from the garden room and offers a better balance between open water and planted margins. Existing wildlife value was retained while the underlying structure was made more dependable.
