Wildlife Pond Restoration & Relining in Bovey Tracey, Devon

Overview
This small wildlife pond in Bovey Tracey had developed a significant leak and had become heavily overgrown over several years. The original pond had been built by the owners approximately four to five years earlier but had gradually lost water, with suspected damage to the liner.
Our brief was to restore the pond, retain its wildlife value, improve its appearance and create a more durable, low maintenance pond for the future.
The Challenge
When we first visited, the pond had almost completely disappeared beneath vegetation.
Issues included:
- Failed leaking liner
- Extremely low water levels
- Excessive plant growth
- Limited open water habitat
- Poor visibility from the garden room
- Lack of usable pond margins
Despite its condition, the pond occupied a beautiful location and had excellent potential as a wildlife feature.
Our Solution
The existing pond was carefully dismantled and stripped back.
Works included:
- Removal of the failed liner
- Reshaping and regrading the pond profile
- Installation of a new liner system
- Creation of shallow wildlife shelves
- Rebuilding the natural stone edging
- Retention and division of suitable existing plants
- Re-establishment of wildlife planting zones
- General landscaping and finishing works
The aim was to create a pond that looked natural, functioned properly and would continue to support amphibians, insects and other garden wildlife.

The Result
The finished pond provides:
- Improved water retention
- Increased wildlife habitat
- Better planting opportunities
- Cleaner sightlines from the garden room
- A more natural appearance
- Reduced future maintenance requirements
Most importantly, the clients were delighted with the transformation.
“John was really delighted and couldn’t believe how quickly you finished it.”
