Leaking Pond Refurbishment
This project began with a leaking, overgrown pond that had lost much of its ecological balance. The old liner was failing, plants had become unmanageable, and the exposed edges meant the pond no longer blended naturally into the garden. The goal was to give it a full refurbishment and restore it as a healthy, attractive wildlife pond.
The Challenges
- Leaking liner: Water was seeping away due to poor installation and wear.
- Exposed liner edges: These spoiled the natural look and reduced habitat value.
- Overgrowth: Irises and other species had taken over, outcompeting more diverse planting.
- Shallow design: The pond lacked depth and structure for long-term ecological function.

Our Refurbishment Process
Excavation & reshaping
We dug out additional soil to increase the pond’s depth and created clear planting shelves for a wider range of aquatic species.New liner installation
A protective underlay and robust EPDM liner were installed to ensure a long-lasting, watertight base.Stonework & structure
Around 8 tonnes of natural slate were used to build planted beds and edge the pond, creating a more stable and natural-looking margin.Planting & propagation
Existing plants were carefully divided and replanted, while new lilies and other species were added to support oxygenation, shade, and biodiversity.Finishing touches
A stepping stone was installed — doubling up as a habitat feature and a perch for the family cat!

The Transformation
The refurbished pond is now a balanced ecosystem that looks natural and provides habitat for a wide range of wildlife. Within just a few months, the planting had matured beautifully — with lilies spreading across the surface, clearer water, and more space for insects, amphibians, and birds.
What was once a leaking, untidy pond is now a thriving feature that will continue to improve year on year.
The Results
- A fully watertight liner system
- Stronger ecological planting zones
- Increased depth for biodiversity and stability
- A natural appearance that integrates into the garden
- Improved habitat for frogs, newts, insects, and birds
“The finished article is a vast improvement. Even the cat has claimed the stepping stone as its favourite lookout!”
