Dartmoor Wildlife Pond Build

A Dartmoor Wildlife Pond Design and Install

This project transformed a medium-sized Dartmoor garden into a thriving wildlife habitat with a custom-designed pond and stream-style waterfall. Built to encourage biodiversity, the pond features deep and shallow zones, native planting, and rainwater-fed circulation for a balanced ecosystem. Wildlife Pond Installation in Dartmoor

Garden Transformation for Nature-Loving Homeowners

Looking to transform your garden into a haven for wildlife? This recent wildlife pond installation in Dartmoor showcases how even a medium-sized garden can become a rich, beautiful habitat for frogs, newts, dragonflies, and more.

Our client wanted a professionally designed and installed wildlife-friendly garden pond with a natural look and minimal maintenance needs. The result? A compact, eco-rich waterscape featuring a small stream waterfall, aquatic planting, and an alpine gravel garden—perfect for both people and pollinators.

Step 1: Choosing the Ideal Pond Location

Before starting your wildlife pond project, it’s crucial to choose the right spot. We worked closely with the client to mark out the pond area, considering sun exposure, visibility from the house, and distance from trees. This helps avoid excess leaf fall while maximising the pond’s ecological and visual impact.

Step 2: Hand-Dug Pond with Wildlife Features

We dug the wildlife pond by hand, shaping a central deep zone for overwintering amphibians and a marginal shelf for aquatic plants. These shallow edges also create safe access points for frogs, newts, birds, and insects.

Looking for garden pond builders in Devon who understand wildlife? Our designs are always tailored to local species and climate conditions.

Step 3: Wildlife Pond Liner Installation

Using a premium-grade flexible liner, we carefully fitted it into the pond base, leaving extra material for the waterfall construction. The liner was shaped to the contours of the pond, creating a stable foundation for rocks and planting.

Step 4: Filling with Rainwater to Protect Wildlife

To ensure a healthy start for pond life, we filled the pond slowly with rainwater collected in water butts. This helps prevent algae blooms and keeps nutrient levels low—ideal for supporting frogs, aquatic insects, and clean water plants.

Step 5: Creating a Natural-Looking Pond Waterfall

We used locally sourced Dartmoor slate to form a stunning rock border and stream-style waterfall feature. Mosses and native ferns will eventually colonise the stonework, enhancing the natural garden pond look.

Spare soil was used to create a small bank next to the pond, planted with alpine species to form a low-maintenance gravel garden.

Step 6: Pump Installation and Wildlife-Safe Borders

A discreet pump was integrated within the waterfall to keep water circulating, oxygenating the pond and preventing stagnation. We also extended planting beds around the pond to provide shelter, foraging areas, and continuity with the rest of the garden.

Step 7: Finishing Touches – Aquatic Plants and Habitat Features

We completed the build with a combination of cobbles, gravel, and wildlife-friendly aquatic plants. Ferns, rushes, and flowering water plants help purify the water and attract pollinators—while also making the pond a beautiful centrepiece for the garden.

Three Months Later – A Thriving Wildlife Garden Pond

Just 12 weeks after completion, the client reported that frogs, newts, and pond insects had already moved in. The aquatic planting is flourishing, and with seasonal pond maintenance (offered by our team), the pond will remain a vibrant ecosystem for years to come.
