Garden Pond Refurbishment in Tavistock, Devon
Transforming a dated crazy paving pond into a modern wildlife-friendly feature
We recently completed a full garden pond refurbishment for a property in Tavistock, Devon. The existing pond, surrounded by ageing crazy paving and suffering from poor water quality, didn’t live up to the high standard of the rest of the garden.
The client wanted to retain the pond’s charm but bring it up to a more natural, functional, and visually appealing standard. The result is a fully re-lined, extended pond with a new natural stone edge, aquatic planting zones, and all-in-one filtration fountains—all blending beautifully into the landscape.
Before: Tired Layout, Poor Water Quality
The old pond had uneven paving, limited space for aquatic planting, and an unstable water level that made it difficult to manage. We began by safely draining the pond and transferring the plants and fish into a holding tank for the duration of the works.
During: Rebuilding the Pond from the Ground Up
We removed the old crazy paving and concrete, keeping the better slate pieces for reuse.
- The pond was extended in depth, width and length, creating more habitat space for fish and wildlife.
- A new EPDM pond liner with protective underlay was installed to improve durability and water retention.
The client also requested additional power supply for pond lighting and pumps, so we installed outdoor-rated twin sockets for flexibility and safety.
After: A Contemporary Wildlife Pond for a Modern Garden
- The reclaimed slate was used to build a clean, secure edge for the pond, creating a more natural look.
- We installed two integrated pump/filter fountain units to ensure water clarity and movement.
- New grass turf (sourced locally from Tavy Turf) was laid around the pond to give a seamless finish and instant visual impact.
- The planting scheme now supports biodiversity, with plenty of room for marginal and aquatic plants to thrive.
A Striking Centrepiece with Ecological Benefits
This pond renovation has completely revitalised the space—providing a beautiful focal point for the garden while supporting fish, aquatic insects, and visiting birds. It’s now much easier to maintain and brings long-term aesthetic and ecological benefits.
