Koi Ponds

Koi Ponds can be an amazing addition to a garden space. The vibrant colours and and activity of large fish swimming around can be mesmerizing.

Koi are a type of carp that come in various colors and can reach an impressive size. They will often greet you enthusiastically eagerly awaiting feed time or just to be plain nosy.

Koi carp are most popular in Japan where thousand of farms are located. Many other countries also farm and supply quality carp though including here in the UK.

Usually you would either use a pond liner or fiberglass.

How deep does a koi pond need to be?

Due to the size that they can grow a large volume and surface area is important. Usually we would recommend 10,000 litres and above. The depth of the pond is usually around 1 meter.

There are couple of reason for this. With larger water volume comes more stability in regards to water quality/chemistry.  This is important as you want your fish to be living in health water for the best colours, size and strength. The more space you give your koi the larger and quicker they are likely to grow.

Koi carp can be more sensitive to lower temperature. Though you can mitigate this by insulating your pond and by using a pond heater a deeper pond will also have thermal protection from the ground.

Are koi ponds hard to maintain?

It largely depends on the installation of your pond and the equipment used.

There is some great filters available for koi ponds and if installed correctly life can be much easier.

We would reccomend that a bottom drain and surface skimmer is used. This will maximize the likelihood of dirt being removed from the pond.

A good filter won’t need too much cleaning and will be simple to maintain when needed. UV clarifiers should be used to keep green water away. The UV lamps should be replaced each spring for best results.

What do koi need in a pond?

Koi carp are quite happy with little or no decoration in their pond. Plants can sometime be seen as a snack and end up creating a mess. There is no harm in having rocks or wood but do bear in mind that detritus can build up around them.

How much does it cost to build a koi pond?

Koi ponds can cost from £10,000 upwards. There are many different design that can be used which effect the price from the size to things like viewing windows and filtration specification.

If a koi pond seems a bit much for what you have in mind for your garden then a standard garden pond may be a better option. They are great for wildlife and goldfish
